Abstract

This issue contains two articles: Montgomery County and Jubal Early's Raid on Washington, July 10-14, 1864 (Cooling) describes Early's march through Montgomery County on his way to attack Washington, which included a raid on Summit Hall, owned by Unionist John DeSellum, and the burning of Montgomery Blair's Falkland mansion in Silver Spring. Emancipation in Montgomery County, Maryland (McGuckian) describes the history of slave-holding practices in Montgomery County in context with the unusual social and political factors that led to the adoption of Maryland's new Constitution emancipating the state's enslaved population in November of 1864.
