Oral Histories from Black Historical Resources in Upper Western Montgomery County, Maryland

Abstract

This collection contains ten oral history transcripts from interviews conducted by George McDaniel during a historical survey of the Black communities in upper western Montgomery County for Sugarloaf Regional Trails, April 1978 through June 1979. The interviewing was completed from January through June of 1979. Communities included in the study are Jerusalem, Jonesville, Martinsburg, Mt. Ephraim, Sugarland, Turnertown, Big Woods, Blocktown, Clarksburg, Seneca/Berryville, and White Grounds. Those interviewed included Howard Lyles; Ethel Forman; Lemuel Graham and Evelyn Herbert; Arnold and Joe Hawkins; Paul, John, and Barbara Sims; Ora Lyles; Tilghman and Bessie Lee; Joshua and Fanny Hamilton and daughter; Tilghman Lee and Paul Wilson; Charlotte Ambush, and Polly Gutheim. The original recordings have been digitized and are available upon request.
