Abstract

The Nurse and the Midwife: Clara Barton touched many lives as the Civil War’s “Angel of the Battlefield” and later as president of the American Red Cross. Among the many Black people Barton employed over the years, none maintained a closer, longer-lasting relationship with Barton than Emma Jones of the Gibson Grove community in Cabin John, who achieved her own successful career as a midwife in lower Montgomery County. Rockville's Old Clock: Nestled in a corner of the Beall-Dawson House stands a tall clock with deep connections to the history of Rockville and Montgomery County. Since its creation by clockmaker Jesse Hayden, circa 1805, this 8-foot, 10-inch clock has served as a silent witness to the changes wrought by wars, economic cycles, legal decisions, and the natural evolution of births, marriages, and deaths.
