Abstract
Sam Eig was a prominent land developer and community leader in Montgomery County. He was born in 1898 in Belarus. He left Russia in 1914 and came to the Washington area in about 1916. During his early years in the United States, he bussed tables at the Plaza Hotel, did construction work, an assistant butcher at Union Station and the Soldier’s Home, and worked as a grocer and liquor merchant.
In the 1930s, he began buying land in Montgomery County for development. His land development projects include the Hillside Apartments, Rock Creek Forest, Silver Spring Shopping Center, Washingtonian Motel and Country Club, and the Washingtonian Towers. Eig also served on numerous boards and committees in Montgomery County, such as the Silver Spring Board of Trade and Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce. He also served as President and Director of the Kiwanis Club of Silver Spring and was co-founder and trustee of Camp Echo Lake for underprivileged children. Eig was also a life member of B’Nai Israel Congregation.
Interviewed by John R. Foley III in 1972. Original transcript and recording is part of the Montgomery County Archives collection, shared with Montgomery History.
